Another Tough Loss for Jackets

Devasting was the word Coach Mitchell used, and it was appropriate.

Here's another article from the Commercial Appeal.

Good, Bad and Fake Extra Points

The Jackets lost a heartbreaker to Southaven. They were down 28 to 21 and scored on a great pass by Jacquez Johnson and an even better catch by Shaquille Hill. Then, eschewing a game-tying extra point, the Jackets ran a fake to try to win the game with a two-point conversion. (Southaven had blocked an extra point earlier in the game.) Southaven sniffed it out, however, and kept Daniel Fumo out of the endzone. Southaven recovered the onside kick to finish it out at 28 to 27.

We knew Ben was interviewed for this October 1 article, but had not seen it until today. (Thanks for the email about it, Ben!)

Super 10 has been Cracked!

Starkville beat Horn Lake like they stole something Friday night, in spite of the totally worthless officiating crew (except for Richie Craven, of course). Here is an article:
Starkville Dominates Horn Lake

Then today they finally were accepted into the Clarion-Ledger Super 10. They are 10th and move into the Class 6-A poll at #5:
C-L Super 10

This week Southaven comes to Starkville. They should provide a little stiffer competition.

BTW, if you're not reading Erin Newman's blog about her first year of med school, you are missing out.

Jackets Dominate Tupelo

Nice article in the Starkville Daily News. They don't mention Ben specifically, but they do talk about the offensive line, which has been playing very well.

The name of the Starkville High student paper is the Jacket Buzz. There is an article about the West Point game with a good picture of Ben. Click on the link below, then read the caption, then click on the link for a bigger pic.

Starkville 21, West Point 20

After a bad first half (including a terrible 1st quarter), the Yellow Jackets were down 20 to 0. Then the Jackets got their heads on straight and scored 21 unanswered in the 2nd half for a dramatic win. West Point missed at 42 yard field goal at the end. (It was accurate, but just short.)

Rivals Article

Last week, the Jackets lost a heart-breaker 14-7 to the Meridian Wildcats (ranked #2 in Mississippi and #59 in the U.S. at the time) but were able to get the win this week against the Green Wave (ranked #3 in Mississippi and #82 nationally). In another month or so, the Jackets get to play South Panola, currently #1 in Miss. and #1 nationally. The schedule is tough but the Jackets are coming around. Rivals U.S. Top 100

I have some Meridian game video and West Point post-game video up as well. (I had some video of the first two West Point drives, but they were terrible. Once we started coming back, Aunt Lisa wouldn't let me jinx it by videoing. She is 2 for 2 and is now required at all games.) My YouTube Site

Oh, and Ben has now played 16 quarters as starting center, so he's earned his letter for the first time. Congrats Ben! Happy Ben

Twitter is a huge deal in communication for 2010. Extension will have to keep up or be left behind. Southeast Farm Press Article

Pictures!

I posted some pictures at my Flickr account:

(I think that Ben's (formal) football picture is one of the best pictures he has ever taken. At least in the last few years!)

I also did finally get some new videos posted on my YouTube account. (See the previous blog below.)

Such an Excitable Boy!

If you know my son Ben, you'd laugh at the title of this. He doesn't get excited about much (MSU sports is about it), but he will "put forth some effort on the football field."

He was mentioned in a nice article in the Starkville Daily News today (with a picture!).

Research Methods Week 2

Today in class, we learn about literature reviews, including a guest demonstration from the library's Brad Brazzeal about searches. So much has changed since I was in my students' shoes. Perhaps I'll give them a little historical view to show them how good they have it now. (I mean, we actually had to go to the library, in the snow, uphill, both ways . . .)

We will also study variables and how to classify them, which is harder than it sounds.
